Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)
If you are interested in visiting Australia, your options are not limited. There are a number of visitor visa streams that may be suitable for your circumstances.
Visitor Visa (Tourist Stream)
The Visitor Visa (Tourist Stream) allows you to visit Australia for any purpose other than business or medical treatment. This means that you can use this visa to visit family or friends, as a tourist and/or for a cruise.
The length of your visa and whether you are granted single or multiple entries into Australia will depend on a number of factors including but not limited to;
- Your reasons for travel;
- Your age and relationship to persons residing in Australia; and
- Your activities including work and study in your resident country.
The above is only an indication of what the Department of Home Affairs may take into consideration and each visa will be determined on a case by case basis.
Visitor visas are generally granted for a period of 3 months, however longer durations can also be granted especially where you are a parent or step parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
Parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents may be granted longer visas of 18 months, 3 years and up to 5 years depending on whether they meet the relevant criteria.
Visitor Visa (Sponsored Family Stream)
The Sponsored Family Stream Visa is similar to the Tourist Stream.
The Family Sponsored Visitor Visa Stream allows people who are outside Australia and have an eligible sponsor in Australia (an eligible relative or Australian Government official willing to sponsor them), to travel to Australia for a holiday and to visit family.
This visa stream is intended for higher risk visitors and contains additional requirements which are designed to provide assurance that the visa holder will comply with their visa conditions and depart Australia before their visa expires.
Under this stream, the Department of Home Affairs may require your sponsor to provide a security bond.
Visitor Visa (Business Visitor Stream)
If you are intending to visit Australia to perform business activities, the business visitor stream may be suitable for you.
The general eligibility requirements for visitor visas will apply here. Further your business activities must be restricted to:
- General business or employment enquiries;
- Investigating, negotiating, entering into or reviewing a business contract;
- Conducting activities as part of an official government visit; and
- Taking part in conferences, trade fairs or seminars.
You will not be able to:
- Work for or provide services to a business or organisation based in Australia; and
- Sell goods or services directly to the public.
